A bit about us:
St. Peter's Church was consecrated for worship on 29th June 1900 by Bishop Willard. The building was extended to its present shape and completed for St Peter's Day 1933. On that day, the whole building was consecrated by Bishop Grierson and the choir was robed for the first time. In 1944 St. Katharine's parochial district was set up as an independent unit as a daughter church. In 2000 the side chapel in the church became the Chapel of the Resurrection, to perpetuate the memory of the original memorial chapel - a private chapel of Belfast Castle which was handed over by the Earl of Shaftesbury to St. Peter's on 18th September 1938 and which closed on 27th August 1972.
On 31st July 1987 a major car bomb exploded in the neighbouring hotel car park causing extensive damage to the church and halls. On 18th October 1989 Bishop Poyntz presided over a Service of Thanksgiving for the restoration of the church.
The church is built of Scrabo sandstone with Giffnock dressings and all wood is oak. Its architectural style is gothic, its stained glass, its walls and its woodcraft tell in outline the story of nineteen centuries of Christianity.
On 7th November 1996, the Diocesan Council grouped the Parish of St. James with the Parish of St. Peter. On 1st October 2005 the grouped parishes became one united parish, and St James closed for worship on June 29th 2008.
